At 6 am they started the pitocin, contractions were slow starting since they used a smaller dose than a normal induction. Around 7am my doctor came in and checked my cervix, I was 3cm dilated. I was extremely tender and sore, so they gave me a shot of demerol and some anti nausea medicine. After that kicked in my dr. came back in to break my water. That was a crazy feeling!
The demerol really kicked in and I got super sleepy, so I slept on and off until around 10am.. I got another cervical check at that point and was 4cm dilated. Contractions were coming pretty good at this point, and we decided to go ahead and get an epidural. It made things so much better!
I slept on and off until 2pm. I got checked again and was 7cm dilated!! I was super excited because with my first I had a failed induction, I made it to 5cm and then stalled which is why I ended up with a csection.
By 4pm I was 9cm dilated. Things were really going great, except that I had so much pressure and with every contraction I had the insane urge to push, so I had to fight that constantly which was really hard. It also caused me to tense up which made the contractions less effective so I got stuck at 9cm for a little while. At 5:30pm the anesthesiologist came in and bumped my epidural up which helped so much.
At 6pm I was fully dilated and ready to push! Pushing was really weird at first, I was constantly worried that I wasn't doing it right or something. The nurse kept saying how great a job I was doing, so that gave me motivation to keep trying and pushing harder. Tyler was there holding one of my legs, and coaching me to push which helped so much. He got to see the babies head when it started to show.
After about an hour of pushing things were getting rough, he was "past the point of no return" he was right there, I had the constant urge to push, it wasn't just when I was contracting. At this point my doctor came in to deliver the baby. I was pushing with all my might, I was yelling and saying "I CANNOT DO THIS!" but everyone told me that I could, and that I didn't have any other options at this point. The doctor told me that he was going to have to cut me to get him out, I said "fine, do what you have to, i want him out". They told me to push harder and harder.. In between crying out, yelling and telling them I can't do it he slid halfway out and they told me to look down, I said something along the lines of "I SEE HIM NOW GET HIM OUT" I pushed again and he was out. The entire room cheered for me. There was my delivery nurse, my doctor, and 2 nursery nurses in there. It felt so great to accomplish that.
Tyler cut the cord and the put him on my chest to get cleaned off. It was such an amazing experience and completely worth all the pain. I got to hold my baby the minute he came out, I got to breastfeed him right away, and I didn't have to have an unnecessary surgery. I got to experience childbirth like I always wanted to. It was an empowering experience, not to mention it really brought Tyler and I closer together. He has been telling me how proud of me he is, and what a great job I did. He helped out so much with the baby last night. I am so thankful to have an amazing boyfriend who is already proving to be an amazing father.
Liam Thomas was born Dec. 29, 2011 at 7:32 pm. 21.5 inches long and 8lbs. It took an hour and a half of pushing but I would do it again in a heartbeat!
